Klaus Ospald, born in Münster (Westphalia) in 1956, studied composition at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold and at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg. In 1985 he was a scholarship holder at the Cité des Arts in Paris, and in 1987 he won the first promotional prize of the state capital Stuttgart. In the same year, Ospald took supplementary private lessons with Helmut Lachenmann.
